WHY SIGMA LAMBDA BETA?I chose SLB because I was in search of a family that I could rely on and trust to always have my back. Also, having a group of guys who also like to give back to the community is something I really looked forward to. Service has always been something important to me and that is something that also happens to be important to the brotherhood as well. Besides being culturally diverse, SLB also showed respect for others no matter who they were. I was able to learn to trust myself and have confidence in my decisions. Deciding to embark on this lifelong journey was the best decision of my life. I went to an incredibly diverse boarding school for high school called Saint Lawrence Seminary, which was roughly a third Hispanic, a third Asian, and a third Black and White. I quickly learned to love the school and I created many lifelong friends there. When I graduated I didn’t think that I would be able to make friends of that same caliber again, and when I arrived at Marquette in the fall despite being White, it was a shock to me how much of the school was white and how distant people felt from each other at Marquette. I was already familiar with Sigma Lambda Beta because my older brother, Alex Conlin is an alumn of Sigma Lambda Beta at Marquette. My brother loved the brotherhood and community that he found when he joined Sigma Lambda Beta. When I arrived at Marquette, I initially had no intention of joining Sigma Lambda Beta, but when I went to O’fest in the fall of 2018, the brothers at their table were so nice and asked me a different question than the other fraternities. The Betas asked me how I was doing, which really spoke to me because the other fraternities only wanted me for the numbers, and did not care how I was feeling whereas it felt like the Betas actually cared. I decided to look more into Sigma Lambda more because of this, and I showed up to a bonfire that they were hosting and I was surprised to see an active brother was an alumn from my high school, Rodrigo Ramirez. We instantly recognized each other and were excited to see each other from then on I created relationships which each brother in the chapter on an individual and personal level to really get to know them, unlike in larger fraternities. I come from a small city here in Wisconsin called Beloit. It is a very minority-based community where everyone knows each other and there’s always something to do with friends. I knew that coming to Marquette was going to be rough considering the predominantly white population. But actually being here was a culture shock I have never experienced before. I had a hard time integrating with the community and rarely came out of my dorm. The community wasn’t the same and I didn’t think there was a solution for this. But then I met my bro Dario in Accounting who told me all about SLB and their multicultural focus. He also told me about SLB’s focus on community service and this was an addition to me because I took part in a lot of community service hours at my high school. I knew that this was the opportunity I was looking for and I had to utilize it. And It was one of the best decisions I’ve made because they are the community and friends I’ve been looking for here at Marquette. I felt comfortable and right at home, they accepted me as one of their family members. The relationships with people that I made through SLB are something I’ll keep close to me because they’ve helped me through this journey and I’ll be here for them no matter what. I come from a very small town in Northern Illinois called Belvidere. It’s a town filled with mostly White folks and Hispanics, and I always felt like I belonged. When I came to Marquette, I felt like I didn’t belong, I felt overwhelmed due to the predominantly Caucasian students on the campus. I wanted to feel like I belonged, and that I was at home. I was seeking a brotherhood, and an organization that would represent me, but where I could be myself. I have a lot of Southern Culture embedded in me as well, and most groups wouldn’t allow me to show this side of me, but SLB accepted me for who I was and I felt at home. This brotherhood also held the same principles, and that was key for me. I have learned so much about myself and how I can help my school and community. I also learned to be more confident in who I was. The best decision I made was to join SLB, and I know I will continue to grow in the everlasting brotherly love. I wanted to be a part of something greater than myself. When I first got to meet them I noticed how close they were with each other. They were genuine men that seemed to care about their interests. SLB also provides programs that will allow me to grow as a leader and professionally. They don’t try to change who I am, but they give me the opportunity to enhance my personal capabilities. They invested their time to establish a relationship with me and showed me what it’s like to be the best version of myself. Something they always say is quality over quantity. Knowing that I have a group of talented brothers supporting me for a lifetime is all I can ask for. Their pillar on cultural awareness also drew me in. I come from one of the most diverse schools in Illinois and I learned to appreciate different cultures growing up. SLB allowed me to gain a new perspective in life and made it so much more special. |
